Research and Planning Analysis to Saw

Analysis Opening of Saw

The opening scene of Saw starts with many extreme close up shots of things, these things include ticking clock, a wall, another clock and a TV. There are also close up shots used these shots include numbers, newspaper articles and other images of some streets and roads, that may link to the film in the end. The camera angles used are high angle this is used when looking at the clock it is as we are looking up facing upwards. This gives us the sense of realism as if we were there.  The camera movement seems as though it is dolly zoom because the camera is moving closer to the subject in this case it’s the newspaper articles which seem as though they are on a table of some sort.  The sounds used are diegetic and non-diegetic, the diegetic sound is the sound of the man screaming in pain right at the beginning as it starts. The non-diegetic sound is the soundtrack used this music is quite slow but has a sinister beat to it.  The music adds suspense to the film before it’s even started and also it gives a creepy and eerie feel to it iswell.

The editing techniques used are jump cuts, these shots bring out confusion, and the shot is abrupt and shocks the audience that is why it was used. There is also some fades in the opening scene used this gives the impression of difference in places or time. There was also some fuzzy like TV images used this creates realism as though it is a real documentary of events. The lighting used in the open scene is dark and gloomy and eerie and again links into the theme of the colour is bland and not really bright this would distract from the meaning it is trying it bring, which is that of scariness. The graphics used are mostly numbers these numbers must link into the film somehow. These numbers flash unexpectedly on the screen, these colour of these numbers are white and are bold.  At the beginning u see he twisted picture the company may be used this is in barbed wire this automatically gives the film a theme of thriller, this is even before the opening scene has started. The title of the film which is saw is all white silvery fluorescent  colour whereas the background is black this stands out even though the writing is very small. It’s effective because it seems as though it is a metal material. The way it fades out is also very effective iswell.

The mis-en-scene in this opening scene is also very effective. The set design is that of a horror, we are unaware where it is but we get a feel as though it is in a room with all the clutter   everywhere and the papers and the TV iswell that is on. The space used again looks claustrophobic with all the papers on the desk, also the TV and thing everywhere. The props used like the clocks and timing suggests that the characters will need to do something about time.

The characters involved are not seen in the opening scene however we do see someone in a mask, which is quite disturbing and creepy, this might be involved in the film maybe. We don’t really know if any men are women are involved in this which is good because it keeps us guessing and thinking. The location seem as though it’s in a room we do see some images one includes a barn yard of some kind; the others include building and roads of places it’s in American but no known where. The location kept unknown is also keeping us guessing and thinking where it will be set. The visual style is creepy and eerie and also mysterious. The themes of this film could be death, killing all the things that would associated with the genre of horror which is what Saw is.

Overall the opening Scene is very scary and creepy and makes the audience be prepared to watch something that will be of the opening. The opening scene is full of anticipation and anxiety to what will happen next.
